With a Poet’s Eye: Children Translate the World $4.2 "Through in-depth dialogue, this gifted duo exposes their classes to poetry through music, art, dreams, letters, and the natural world. They capture the essence of what poetry is, its power to transform through metaphor, and the joy of seeing anew through one’s own "Poet’s Eye."" – Voices from the Middle A poet takes the million and one things the world offers, pays close attention, and using the tools of poetrymusic and image and wordtranslates the world’s gifts into poems. This may seem like a luxury few teachers can afford, especially for children who have trouble sitting still, processing language, and mastering basic writing skills. But poetry, Jane McVeigh and Mary Lynn Ellis claim, enables all children to say what they see, think, and feel most deeply, and will help them to become stronger writers in every other genre. "With a Poet’s Eye" takes teachers beyond the important notion of sharing passions into more specific suggestions for helping elementary students understand what poems can do in their lives. Replete with suggestions of poems to share and activities to promote writing, it is far more than a recipe book. Instead it is a chronicle of two teachers who have grown and developed as writers, of two friends who inherently and irrevocably value poetry. Their commitment to teaching poetry is contagious. The authors show how young children come to love playing with language as they make poems, how poetry is part of the entire curriculumhistory, mythology, fine arts, music, science, and language artsand how it affects the ways children and adults view the world and their own parts in it. The book is enriched by numerous samples of poems by published poets as well as students, illustrating the efficacy of the teaching practices they describe as well as the pure power of poetry itself. "With a Poet’s Eye" fills an important need for more information and guidance on teaching poetry. Preservice and inservice language arts teachers will find the authors’ stories both inspiring and encouraging. |

Grammar of the Sanskrit Language $58.59 While working for the East India Company in Bengal, Charles Wilkins (1749 1836) became one of first Europeans to master the Sanskrit language. He proceeded to set up a printing press in Calcutta to publish works in Sanskrit and other Indian languages. Wilkins also undertook further related projects, including this work, published in London in 1808, which was part of his larger scheme to write a dictionary of the language and to translate a great epic poem, the Mahabharata. The grammar was the only part of the project that was completed. He never finished the dictionary, and only translated about one-third of the poem, though the part he worked on, the Bhagavad-Gita, became famous. The grammar attempts a comprehensive explanation of the language, ranging from the Devanagari alphabet to indeclinable words, and it was a vital resource in making Indian languages accessible to an English-speaking public. |

Language of Nature: Quantum World Revealed $28.73 Understanding The Quantum World and Scientific History Science is truly one of the deepest, the most complex, and the most relevant forms of knowledge in human history. It deals with such aspects like life, energy, matter, and molecules. But even until now, the study of science has been based on empirical knowledge since the time of Galileo and this fact brings out the call for a deeper form of scientific research which leads to the quantum world. In his groundbreaking new picture book Language of Nature: Quantum World Revealed, author David Judd Nutting presents to the world his views and in-depth study on science, nature and the world itself. Language of Nature begins with the task of explaining to its readers what the world of quantum physics is all about. Since science is based on knowledge derived from the five senses, researchers are unable to verify or demonstrate the quantum world which is actually transempirical. Quantum physics explains natures selective process while the transempirical world of nature becomes a creative process, which experimental knowledge could never translate or explain effectively. Aside from presenting the quantum world, the book contains very rich information and photos on famous researchers (including Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison), technological development, scientific history, inventions, video games, the solar system and so much more. There is no doubt that readers will have so much to learn from the authors findings. Richly-layered, surprising and very intelligent, Language of Nature is easily one of the most educational and most unique picture books about science today. Readers, including students, researchers and scientists, will enjoyimmersing themselves with this picture book, especially when it comes to getting an acceptable interpretation of the quantum world and getting all the details in the history of science. Language of Nature: Quantum World Revealed goes beyond conventional science and is truly an essential read |

Contents: Language Define; The Elements of Speech; The Sounds of Language; Form in Language; Grammatical Processes; Form in Language; Grammatical Concepts; Types of Linguistic Structure; Language as a Historical Product: Drift; Language as a Historical Product: Phonetic Law; How Languages Influence Each Other; Language, Race and Culture; and Language and Literature. |

Divided by a Common Language: A Guide to British and American English $14.94 Puzzled by signs warning you to "mind the gap" in the London Underground? Wondering what will be on your plate if you order "toad in the hole" in a London cafe? In Divided by a Common Language, Christopher Davies explains these expressions and discusses the many differences in pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary between British and American English. He compares the customs, manners, and practical details of daily life in the United Kingdom and the United States, and American readers will enjoy his account of American culture as seen through an Englishman’s eyes. Davies tops it off with an amusing list of expressions that sound innocent enough in one country but make quite the opposite impression in the other. Two large glossaries help travelers translate from one variety of English to the other, and additional lists explain the distinctive words of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Divided by a Common Language is the ideal travel companion for both British visitors to the U.S. and American visitors to the U.K. It is also the perfect book for Britons interested in American culture and Americans enjoying British novels, movies, and television at home. |
